The assembly session will begin on August 14. The Gehlot government has awafer-thin majority and BJP is hopeful of toppling it with the help of 19 Congress rebels led by Sachin Pilot. Leader of opposition in Rajasthan assembly, Gulab Chand Kataria, said BJP decided to move some of its MLAs to Gujarat to pre-empt the poaching moves.
“There is no fear of these MLAs leaving BJP. But why give an opportunity to Congress to attack us. Wisdom lies in not allowing your opponent to launch an attack on you,” Kataria told ET. Asked why only 19 MLAs were taken to Gujarat and how this selection was made, he said: “The opponent always attacks the weak link. These MLAs are mostly tribals.” BJP leaders alleged that Gehlot has “misused” the police and state administration to intimidate those MLAs who are from the poor background or belong to the weaker sections. BJP’s state unit chief Satish Poonia said the state government has been tapping phones of the opposition MLAs and some people close to Gehlot had approached a few lawmakers to poach them. “We came to know that some of our MLAs were approached by various people to make them defect from BJP.
They offered to facilitate a conversation between the MLAs and the CM. Our MLAs, especially from the SC and ST communities, were under a lot of stress due to this. When we came to know we took up the matter with these MLAs,” Poonia told ET. Poonia said police officials have made offers like withdrawing minor cases pending against close relatives of some of these MLAs. He cited the case of a lady MLA whose husband has an old legal case against him. Some MLAs have also been offered money or harassed in their constituencies, he added.
Meanwhile, BJP is trying to keep factionalism within its own camp in check. BJP president JP Nadda had directed Raje to visit Delhi for a meeting where the Rajasthan issue was discussed, sources said. “Raje had been staying aloof from all the political developments in Rajasthan in the last few weeks. Her meeting with the central leadership was held to discuss the issues and ensure that the state unit is united,” a BJP leader said. Three MLAs from Jhalawar who are loyal to Raje have refused to go to Gujarat till she asked them to do so. 45 of the 72 BJP MLAs are said to be from the Raje camp and her support is crucial at this juncture.
