BJP in UP sees Syed Zafar Islam's Rajya Sabha ticket as reward for hard work

    Synopsis

Raza was brought in as an MLC in the state legislative council - the UP legislative assembly has no Muslim representation from BJP - and made into a spokesperson and state minister. He is at present the Muslim face of the party in the state.

Syed Zafar Islam - who was named by the BJP as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha bypoll to a vacant seat from Uttar Pradesh - is set to be the party’s Muslim face from the state in Parliament after four years.

Islam (45) is a party spokesperson and a former investment banker based out of Mumbai. His victory is all but certain due to the BJP's overwhelming majority in the Uttar Pradesh state assembly. He is seen in the party as a young and educated spokesperson who held forth the party's stand on key Muslim issues like the ban on triple talaq. And, importantly, he was involved in the BJP's efforts to bring his friend, the then Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia, into the party's fold and grab power in Madhya Pradesh.

BJP had Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in the Rajya Sabha from UP for two terms from 2002 to 2008 and from 2010 to 2016, before he was nominated from Jharkhand. Islam’s nomination for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in UP is being perceived in the state as a soft signal to Muslims as the party did not give a single ticket to member of the community in both the 2017 assembly elections and the 2019 general elections. The opposition parties however see it as the BJP’s attempt to reach out following the start of construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Mohsin Raza, BJP spokesperson in UP, told ET that Islam's nomination should be seen as his party's commitment to reward those who put in a lot of hard work

“If there is one party in which the hard work of a person is never ignored, whichever community they belong to, it is the BJP. It is not proper to see this from any other angle – our party promotes people who work dedicatedly. Be it Sudhanshu Trivedi, Anil Baluni or GVL Narsimha Rao who were brought into the Rajya Sabha,”

Raza was brought in as an MLC in the state legislative council - the UP legislative assembly has no Muslim representation from BJP - and made into a spokesperson and state minister. He is at present the Muslim face of the party in the state.

This is a beauty of democracy where parties have to do certain good things , though under compulsion.
