Bundelkhand role for Uma Bharati as water minister

NEW DELHI: Even as Uma Bharati lost water resources and Ganga rejuvenation portfolios, she will have two important departments — sanitation and drinking water— which are dear to PM Narendra Modi.

The choice for allocating Bharati the portfolio of drinking water has perhaps much to do with the acute shortage of drinking water in Bundelkhand region which accommodates not only her own Jhansi LS seat (UP), but also her native district Tikamgarh in neighbouring MP.

Bundelkhand, which is spread over UP’s seven and MP’s six district, has been witnessing acute shortage of drinking water. In UP polls, BJP has won all the 19 seats in Bundelkhand region. Besides, Jalaun, Hamirpur, Banda and Jhansi in Bundelkhand are represented by BJP MPs.

Bundelkhand already figures on the top priority of UP CM Yogi Adityanath who had visited Jhansi soon after assuming the office in April. Yogi government has already approved a Rs 47-cr package to ensure availability of drinking water in the parched Bundelkhand region.

Bundelkhand is one region where villagers have to spare a good time to wait for their turn to get drinking water in long queues. At the time of heat wave, it is very difficult to get water as levels dip.
