Devendra Fadnavis target of Maharashtra BJP leaders

MUMBAI: BJP, which failed to come to power in Maharashtra despite being the largest party, is facing a rebellion targeted at former CM Devendra Fadnavis.

Against this backdrop, the meeting of BJP leaders Eknath Khadse and Pankaja Munde on Wednesday assumes significance as both leaders have been sending out signals that they were not happy with many things in the party. Before meeting Pankaja, Khadse met former BJP minister Vinod Tawde, another disgruntled leader who was denied a ticket during the assembly polls.

As of now, both Pankaja and Tawde have not openly come out against Fadnavis. Things might change if BJP stays in opposition for long, fear some BJP leaders.

After meeting Pankaja, Khadse said the party should take action against those who ensured the defeat of his daughter Rohini Khadse from Jalgaon and Pankaja from Parli in Beed.

Fadnavis seems to be his target although he did not name him. “I am not blaming the party, those who led the party are responsible for this,” Khadse said. When asked whether he is blaming Fadnavis as he led the party during the elections, he said: “You are smart, you can understand what I am trying to say.”

BJP leaders told ET that the party is supporting Fadnavis and will back him against this latest revolt. “Pankaja was provided all party resources during the elections. She was a minister and, if she still lost, then it is clear that people were probably not happy with her work,” said a BJP leader. He said Khadse’s daughter Rohini lost the polls because a Sena leader stood against her and won. “Fadnavis has done a lot for the party. However, the longer the Sena government stays in power, the weaker his clout will be in the state and in Delhi,” a BJP leader said.
