Inaugurating three hi-tech testing labs, in Noida (Delhi-NCR), Kolkata, and Mumbai, PM said saying these are centers of economic activity too. “Our deaths are much less compared to other big countries. Our recovery rate is high and is increasing daily – nearly 10 lakh people have recovered. We have 1,300 labs operational and we are conducting 5 lakh daily tests. Efforts are on to increase this to 10 lakh tests daily,” the PM said.
Modi said Indian scientists were working fast on a coronavirus vaccine and asked the chief ministers to ensure that ‘corona warriors’ do not suffer from fatigue and that retired and new medical professionals join the health system. He pointed out that India was now an exporter of medical equipment like PPEs, N95 masks, and ventilators. “We can produce 3 lakh N95 masks and 5 Lakh PPE kits daily and manufacture 3 lakh ventilators in a year,” PM said. UP, West Bengal and Maharashtra CMs were present during the meeting.
Uttar Pradesh overtook Maharashtra on Monday with 19.4 lakh tests to climb to the second spot behind Tamil Nadu, becoming the first state to conduct a record number of nearly 1.07 lakh tests in a day. UP had done only 6.63 tests till June 27 and has conducted an additional 13 lakh tests since.
“States which have done a lot of testing have controlled the spread of the pandemic. Our aim is to test widely, detect cases early for proper treatment and save lives,” UP’s additional chief secretary (Home), Awanish Awasthi told ET. Out of 5.15 lakh tests done nationwide on Sunday, nearly one-fifth were done in UP.
Out of the 1.07 lakh tests done in UP on Sunday, nearly half were rapid antigen tests. “The CM has directed that over 65,000 antigen tests and over 35,000 RT-PCR tests be done daily. UP has kept its positivity rate low at around 3.6%, including on Sunday when 3,578 positive cases were detected,” Awasthi said, claiming UP will soon emerge at the top spot in the country in total tests.
Among other states reporting maximum cases, Tamil Nadu is conducting about 65,000 daily tests; Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are at 50,000 daily tests while Bihar and West Bengal are at 15,000 tests daily. West Bengal however has a positivity ratio of 4.7% while Bihar is at 5.7%, with their daily positivity rate being in double figures, and both these high-population states have been asked hence by the Centre to drastically increase their daily testing numbers now on.
