Foot overbridge collapses near CST station in Mumbai, over 30 injured and 6 dead

The incident took place during peak hours, when there was a lot of rush on the overbridge.

Six people have died and at least 30 people were seriously injured when a major portion of a foot overbridge near CST station in south Mumbai caved in. The incident took place during peak hours, when there was a lot of rush on the overbridge.

Two deceased women have been identified as Apoorva Prabhu and Ranjana Tambe. The third person has been identified as Zahid Shiraj Khan, a male aged 32. The injured persons have been taken to three hospitals namely; St George Hospital, G T Hospital, Bombay Hospital.

Mumbai police is in the process of registering an FIR against concerned officials of Central Railway and BMC officials under section 304A (Causing death by negligence) of IPC.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 Lakh each for the families of those who died in the incident and compensation of Rs 50,000 for the injured. State govt will provide for their treatment, said Fadnavis.

The railway ministry has extended all help to the victims and the rescue operations. The Congress has urged all its workers to help with the rescue efforts.

PM Narendra Modi has expressed his pain over the loss of lives in the foot overbridge tragedy.

Maharashtra chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis in a tweet has expressed grief and has instructed the administration for speedy rescue efforts.

Foot over bridge connecting CSMT platform 1 north end with BT Lane near Times of India building has collapsed. Injured persons are being shifted to hospitals. Traffic affected. Commuters to use alternate routes. Senior officers are on spot, read a tweet from Mumbai police.

The National Disaster Response Force in a tweet said, "As per the information received, a part of foot over bridge near CSMT station in Mumbai collapsed. As per initial information 10-12 persons are feared to be trapped under the debris. An NDRF team has been moved from Andheri center."
