NEW DELHI: To make Mahatma Gandhi’s way of living and message more contemporary for the younger generation, the government is going to come out with 2D animation videos on the core concepts of the Gandhian way of life, like non-violence, harmony, swadeshi (one’s own country) and the welfare of all.

This would be unveiled before Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 and the Ministry of Culture has entrusted this job to The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts which will create this series of short two-three minute long 2D animation videos on the life and message of Mahatma Gandhi in an attempt to connect them to the contemporary context. “As is well-known, the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi transcended boundaries of time and concepts such as ahimsa, swadesh, swaraj, swachchhata, satyagraha etc. have continued to be relevant in the present context. Thus, it is envisaged that this series of animation videos makes an attempt to convey these core concepts in a modern and accessible manner in order to establish a connect with the young generation,” as per a proposal document, which has been accessed by ET.

Officials said 10 themes have been shortlisted for the videos - Ahimsa (non-violence), Swadeshi (one’s own country), Swachchhata (cleanliness), Samarasata (harmony), Gandhi Mantra, Swaraj (Independence), Satyagraha (peaceful protest), Ahamanyata (pride), Brahmacharya (celibacy) and Sarvodaya (welfare of all). The animation videos would carry quotations selected from the writings of Mahatma Gandhi, outline historic events associated with and relevant to the shortlisted themes and come with songs and music from Mahatma Gandhi’s Ashram Bhajanavali.
