Ground water could be India's big job killer

Over 14,000 applications for ground water extraction from industries in the north held back by Central Ground Water Authority citing NGT orders.

By Anubhuti Vishnoi, ET Bureau |Updated: December 12, 2019, 06.12AM IST
Many industries in North India, dependent on ground water, could be staring at imminent closure with permission being denied for water extraction as Central ministries and the NGT are yet to pronounce a policy on ground water extraction. Failure to make even an interim arrangement for nearly a year now may lead to shutdowns and job losses. ET reports:
aiming to work in the “reverse direction”. The May 2019 panel had made some radical recommendations including imposing a ‘water use charge’ for agricultural use and barring all new industry in the OCS areas. The NGT is now slated to hear the case on January 15, 2020 –– a whole year after it first held back the guidelines.
