MAHASAMUND | KANKER | BHILAI: Union home minister Rajnath Singh virtually put Chhattisgarh’s new Congress government on notice, saying he was disappointed by the latest Maoist attack in the state in which a BJP MLA and four policemen were killed.

On Thursday, Singh addressed a BJP rally at Kanker, about 50 kms from the site of the attack. "People here thought it has been 15 years (under BJP rule in the state), so they chose a new government. The government should run properly. See what has happened now. A BJP MLA and four policemen were killed by Naxals two days ago,” the minister said. “I was very disappointed when I heard this. I have told the CM (Bhupesh Baghel) plainly to take visible and strict action against Naxalites.”

Singh drove under tight security for 3 kms to the rally venue from a helipad. Local BJP leaders in Kanker complained to Singh of increased activity of Left wing extremists in the area lately. Suspected Maoists felled trees on two roads leading to the rally venue the previous night. ET accompanied Singh to Chhattisgarh, where he addressed rallies at Kanker, Bhilai and Mahasamund.

Singh said he had promised full cooperation to the CM to fight the Maoists. "I urged him that your and my parties may be different, but I will always be two steps ahead to help you fight Naxals. We have to eliminate Naxalism by 2022," Singh said in Bhilai.

Crowds were modest at the rallies, explained by the fact that the BJP had lost the state election badly in December. But Singh was in his element, adding lines to his famous couplet: "Chowkidaar chor nahi pure hai, cure hai aur dubara PM banna sure hai' and "Yehi charcha ab charon aur hai ki Modi once more hai".

In a departure from the past, Singh had Manmohan Singh on his target, saying the former Prime Minister did not let scientists test the anti-satellite weapon in 2007. "Dr Sahib bhale aadmi hain. He told scientists don't do this mistake as the US, Russia and China will get angry. But Narendra Modi said go ahead," Singh said in Kanker. Referring to quick decision-making by Narendra Modi, Singh said in Kanker that the PM had called a meeting with him and three other leaders on the night of the Pulwama attack and said it should be avenged within 15 days.
