Home ministry takes stock of NE security

GUWAHATI: In the backdrop of the anti-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) killing 13 people in Sonitpur, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) held a security review meeting with home secretaries and DGPs of northeastern states here on Friday.

At the meeting, it was decided that such interactions will be held every quarter in different state capitals of the North East. An MHA official, who preferred not to be named, said sharing of regional level intelligence will be further strengthened to check movement of militants in different states.

In the daylong closed door meeting, issues related to modernisation of state police forces, rehabilitation of surrendered militants, filling up of vacancies/sanction of additional posts in state police forces, implementation of
various central schemes were discussed.

This was stated by Navin Verma, joint secretary (North East) in MHA, who had attended the meeting. Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi visited the Bhimajuli area in Sonitpur district on Friday. After Jammu & Kashmir and Manipur, the Assam government is also planning to initiate the Special Police Officers (SPO) model where a select group of civilians will be armed.
