INX Media case: CBI opposes P Chidambaram's bail, files response in Delhi HC
Chidambaram has claimed in his petition that the criminal proceedings against him were "mala fide" and borne out of "political vendetta".
The agency has stated that the gravity of the offence committed by Chidambaram does not entitle him to a bail. The agency has sought dismissal of Chidambaram’s bail contending that keeping in view the magnitude of financial embezzlement and misuse of public office, no relief should be granted to the senior Congress leader.
The agency has claimed that it has overwhelming evidence against Chidambaram and that grant of relief to him would set a wrong precedence in corruption matters as it was allegedly a clear case of betrayal of trust.
The probe agency has further claimed that Chidambaram is a flight risk as evidence from his conduct of evading the summons. It has further submitted that the role of co-accused is under investigation including alleged tampering and forgery of government records.
Chidambaram’s bail plea is slated for hearing on September 23 in the Delhi High Court. Chidambaram, currently lodged in Tihar jail, in his petition has alleged that the criminal proceedings against him were “mala fide” and borne out of “political vendetta”.
