PATNA: With the restoration of JDU and BJP alliance in Bihar, chief minister Nitish Kumar has embarked on his new political mission to out manoeuvre his old rival and recent partner, RJD boss Lalu Prasad, in the run-up for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

His main weapon to politically counter RJD would be faster execution of his development programme, observers said. It was Kumar’s special focus on scheme delivery system that helped him connect his party with a major section of non-Yadavs among the OBC across the state, they said.

One positive for the CM is that he does not have to worry about intervention in government matters from ally BJP, they said. Since both JDU and BJP have an inkling about RJD’s strong Muslim-Yadav support base, they would not want to commit any mistake and subsequently invite anti-incumbency at the ground level during their fresh inning in the state.

The government’s main focus is expected to be on the ambitious development programme known as ‘Nitish Ke Saat Nischay’, or ‘seven resolves of Nitish’, which Kumar was personally monitoring while heading the grand alliance government. Meant to improve the quality of life in Bihar, the seven resolves include constructing drains in every human settlement, and providing potable water and free electricity connection to every house. Under the student credit card scheme, the government offers education loan of up to Rs 4 lakh to the youth. Kumar has already created a Bihar Vikas Mission to ensure proper monitoring of the seven scheme.

It would be also a new experience for Kumar to have a favourable government at the Centre. JDU camp now believes Bihar can now make progress on development front to reduce poverty, increase per capita income and boost industrialisation.

“These are areas where CM Nitish can seek the Centre’s full assistance to ensure Bihar’s proper growth,” a JDU leader said. Unlike RJD, JDU workers will be in an easy position to develop better understanding with BJP at ground level, experts said.
