NEW DELHI: The Special Protection Group (SPG) will not provide security to family members of a prime minister and former PMs if they do not live with them in their official residence, according to an SPG Act amendment bill tabled by the home ministry in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

The Bill has also sought to provide security cover to the former premiers and their family members not beyond five years from the date the prime minister demits office. Under the existing law, the SPG cover for former PMs and their family members was reviewed every year. During an amendment discussed in 1991, the home ministry had proposed a five-year cover for the former PMs.

Another amendment into the 1988 Act deals with the withdrawal of the SPG cover from a former prime minister. “Such proximate security shall also stand withdrawn from the members of his or her immediate family,” it said.

“In the Act, there is no cut-off period for providing SPG protection to the former prime ministers or members of their immediate families. Thus, the number of individuals to be provided SPG cover can potentially become quite large,” said Union minister of state for home affairs G Kishan Reddy while introducing the Bill on behalf of home minister Amit Shah.
