New Delhi: With an increasing number of Indians going into home quarantine as a precautionary measure in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on Wednesday issued guidelines on handling waste from households so quarantined. It has directed all states and urban local bodies to ensure collection of biomedical and domestic waste in 'yellow bags' from the doorstep of the homes under quarantine, or a designated spot. The guidelines were issued after a series of meetings with health experts.

Trained and authorised staff with full protective gear will collect the waste from quarantined homes for proper disposal and this will be included among “essential services”, the apex pollution board of the country has said. Considering that there may be generation of large volume of yellow colour-coded (incinerable) Covid-19 waste, the CPCB has also permitted that states which do not have the common biomedical waste treatment facility may dispose of this waste in hazardous waste incinerators with due segregation.

These new guidelines are in addition to those issued on March 18 for the management of coronavirus-related hospital waste. The CPCB has clarified that a quarantine camp, quarantine home or home-care referred to a place where people with suspected infection or the contacts of suspected or confirmed cases had been directed by authorised hospitals or local authorities to stay for at least 14 days for observation for any symptoms of Covid-19.
