Soon after the allegation surfaced, Jal Shakti Minister I am ready for any probe denied that it was his voice in the audio clip. He said he was ready for any probe on the matter. “This is not my voice… Let there be an investigation. I am ready for any probe.” Later he tweeted in Sanskrit “ultimately, righteousness triumphs”.
Rajasthan BJP leaders told ET that Sanjay Jain, who purportedly figures in one of the conversations with Congress rebel MLA Bhanwarlal Sharma, where the issue of toppling the Ashok Gehlot government was discussed, was not a party member. “There used to be a Sanjay Jain in BJP who was the Jaipur district president once. But this is not the same person,” a BJP leader said. Later, Rajasthan BJP unit chief Satish Poonia alleged at a news conference that the person in the phone conversation was a Congress worker. Shekhawat denied he knew Jain.
After BJP ally Hanuman Beniwal, who heads the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party, alleged on Thursday that Vasundhara Raje Scindia was trying to save the Gehlot government, a senior BJP leader said the RLP leader has been opposed to Raje for several years and his support base likes his attacks on the former chief minister. “He is only catering to his own vote-bank. This rivalry is not new. How can Raje call up Congress MLAs and ask them to support Gehlot and not Pilot? Will they listen to a BJP leader and more importantly will BJP not come to know of this? Can Raje escape action from the party then?” the BJP leader said, preferring anonymity. Beniwal is known for his vituperative speeches against Raje.
However, Raje has remained in Dholpur, around 270 km away from Jaipur, and has kept away from the political developments. On Beniwal’s tweet, sources said that Leader of the Opposition Gulab Chand Kataria had called up Raje on Wednesday and the two discussed the developments and BJP’s plans. “Since there has been no structured meeting of BJP in Jaipur yet, the question of Raje keeping away from party deliberations does not arise,” the senior BJP leader said.
