Kevadiya: “Those who can’t win in war against us are trying to challenge the unity of our country. But they forget that such attempts through centuries have not been able to efface us or defeat our unity,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an oblique reference to Pakistan.

He was addressing at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia Colony in Gujarat on Thursday on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Dedicating the abrogation of article 370 to Sardar Patel, Prime Minister said that the article 370 gave nothing to the state of Jammu and Kashmir apart from secessionism and terrorism. “It was only in Jammu and Kashmir where Article 370 was in place and it was only in Jammu and Kashmir where about forty thousand people were killed due to terrorism over three decades,” he added.

For decades, article 370 had kept a temporary wall between Indians and those living on the other side of the wall too were living in instability. The wall that was promoting secessionism and terrorism has been brought down, Modi said, adding that Sardar Patel used to say that if the issue of Kashmir stayed with him, the resolution of it would not have taken such a long time.

Stating that the bifurcation of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh is not merely to ‘draw lines on the ground’, the Prime Minister said that the measures have been taken to build up a strong link of trust, which was desired by Sardar Patel.

Expressing his satisfaction over the fact that the government employees in J&K and Ladakh will start getting the benefit of the recommendation of the seventh pay commission from today, the Prime Minister said that from now on the real participation of the cooperative federalism will be visible and new highways, railway lines, schools colleges and hospitals will take the development of these states to new heights. There will be political stability in the state and the game of pulling down governments for vested interests will stop, he added.

The Prime Minister further said that while at one time the chasm of distrust between the North East and the rest of the country was widening with serious questions over physical and emotional connectivity, the situation is changing today and the secessionism there is changing to attachment. Decade old issues are being resolved and the entire North East is getting rid of violence and blockade, he added further.

“We are giving emphasis on emotional, economic and constitutional integration of the country, drawing inspiration from Sardar Patel,” Modi said adding that without which one cannot imagine a strong global position for India in the 21st century.

Reminding the audience about Sardar Patel’s idea of Unity of Purpose, aim and endeavour, for the stability of the country, the Prime Minister called for unity at every level.

He also maintained that it is this unity of the country that poses the gravest of challenges to its adversaries and makes the world take India seriously.
