PM Modi embarks on the launch of Rs 4,500 cr-worth bonanza for Bihar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted several initiatives taken by the Centre to help farmers and migrants from Bihar during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, including providing free ration to migrants returning home from cities, and PMGKAY.

NEW DELHI: Starting his speech in Bhojpuri on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on the launch of a series of initiatives worth nearly Rs 4,500 crore for Bihar which is heading for the assembly polls soon.

With the belief that Modi’s face is highly popular in Bihar, the party’s state unit has proposed two dozen virtual rallies of the PM once the state election date is announced. Modi announced projects of fisheries, agriculture, and animal husbandry worth Rs 294 crore for an “AatmaNirbhar Bihar” on Thursday. The pan-India Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana with an investment of Rs 20,000 crore over the next four-five years was also announced.

Modi lauded the JDU-BJP government’s works in rural areas, saying chief minister Nitish Kumar had performed well in making drinking water reach 70 per cent of the households from just two per cent covered till five years ago. “As many as 60 lakh houses in Bihar got water connection during the Covid time which is remarkable,” he said. The PM also reminded 75 lakh farmers of Bihar that Rs 6,000 crore had reached their bank accounts under PM Kisan Nidhi.

The CM seconded the PM while taking a swipe at opposition parties. “Some people keep speaking without knowing the amount of work we have done and 76 per cent people in Bihar who are dependent on agriculture would be happy with the PM’s announcements,” said Nitish Kumar. Modi also said the scheme of free ration has been extended to Diwali and Chhath Puja “to reach every needy fellow of Bihar and every migrant family that returned from outside”. He also said Bihar has faced floods bravely with both the Centre and the state government making effort to ensure relief work at a fast pace.

ET has learned that projects worth Rs 4,500 crore in total will be either inaugurated or announced by the PM in a series of announcements till September 23 or 25. Some of these major initiatives worth Rs 2,720 crore will be for the railways, including the inauguration of the long-waited rail bridge in Supaul over the Kosi River worth Rs 516 crore and new railway lines in Vaishali and Nalanda plus the electrification of existing rail routes in Samastipur, Bhagalpur and Sitamarhi.

BJP state president Sanjay Jaiswal on Thursday said the PM will also lay the foundation stone of a bridge over the river Ganga in Patna which will run parallel to the existing Mahatma Gandhi Setu. “PM will give Bihar lots of things in five phases till September 25,” said Jaiswal. Petroleum and natural gas projects worth Rs 901 crore will be announced on September 13 by the PM including a new gas pipeline from Paradip to Durgapur and an LPG plant in east Champaran’s Sugauli. Housing and urban development projects worth Rs 277 crore will also be announced on a later date.

An effort is also being made to inaugurate the Darbhanga airport by the end of the month. Civil aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri will be visiting Darbhanga on September 12 to take stock of the project. Construction of the interim terminal building of the airport is complete and work for strengthening the runway for accommodating aircraft such as Boeing 737-800, construction of new Apron with connecting taxiway and the connecting road is in full swing and soon the airport will be ready for civil operations, said the ministry.
