Leader of opposition in the Rajasthan assembly, Gulab Chand Kataria, said that having numbers is not the only basis for moving a no-confidence motion and BJP’s aim behind this move is to expose the shortcomings of the Gehlot dispensation.
“A no-confidence motion is not moved only to defeat a government. This motion will be moved to bring out the failures of the government. We will move the no-confidence motion on Friday morning on the floor of the assembly,” Kataria told ET.
As per the rules, one-fifth of the total strength of the House (40 out of 200 in case of Rajasthan Assembly) has to back the notice for a no-confidence motion for it to be accepted. Then it is for the Speaker of the House to allocate time for debate and subsequent voting on the motion.
“We want to use this debate to highlight the failures of this government. They cannot mislead the people with their fake smiles and drama of a patch up. They will have to apologise to the people of the state for leaving the government ‘bhagwan bharose’ (at the mercy of God) for more than a month,” Kataria said.
Among the issues on which BJP plans to corner the Congress government are the administrative laxity in fighting Covid as the chief minister and his Cabinet colleagues were staying away in a hotel for a month. “The CM also has the home portfolio and the law and order in the state is in tatters. There is also the plight of farmers due to the locust attack, the rain shortfall, which has destroyed crops in some areas, and erratic power supply,” Kataria said.
He also mentioned the Congress election promise of waiving off farm loans within 10 days of coming to power and demanded that the government release the list of beneficiaries to prove its claim.
The decision to move a no-confidence motion was taken after a meeting of BJP MLAs in Jaipur on Thursday morning to discuss the course of action during the assembly session beginning Friday.
Former CM Vasundhara Raje attended the meeting that was conducted in the presence of senior BJP leaders representing the party high command — Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar, party general secretary Muralidhar Rao, vice president Avinash Rai Khanna and joint general secretary (organisation) V Satish. The norm is to send only two observers from the Centre but BJP brass took extra care to ensure the meeting went off smoothly.
Raje also spoke during the meeting. Sources said she asked the party rank and file to stay united and motivated to fight Congress. She referred to her mother Vijayaraje Scindia and said one thing she learnt from her was that the party was bigger and more important than any individual or leader.

No Confidence Motion is of academic interest. Even BJP knows it would lose it. It merely wants to know how many MLA from
Vasubdhara Faction are behind BJP or Raje faction who would vote for Gehlot govt. If BJP loses NCM, it will be prevented from launching same motion again for 6 months. in that case, Gehlot govt. will live in comfort for at least 6 months.
