MUMBAI: The Mumbai Police asked Tablighi Jamaat members who attended the Nizamuddin gathering in Delhi last month to approach the nearest police station or call on the local civic body helpline number 1916, warning them of punitive action if they failed to do so.

A similar warning was issued by the Nashik district administration. “We request all attendees of Tablighi Markaz at Nizamuddin, New Delhi to report their travel details on @mybmc helpline 1916 and help us in our fight against this pandemic,” the Mumbai Police said in a post on microblogging site Twitter.

“Those who don’t cooperate will face strict action under the IPC, Disaster Management Act and Epidemic Act. It is our request and your responsibility to report your travel details.” More than 9,000 people, including from several foreign countries, are suspected to have attended the congregation which is now being seen as a prime catalyst of the spread of Covid-19 across states. Maharashtra alone has reported close to a dozen positive cases connected to Jamaat.
