Nagpur-born Justice Bobde studied law from Nagpur University and became a Bombay high court judge in March 2000, where he served for over 12 years till his elevation as the chief justice of Madhya Pradesh HC in October 2012. He was selected to be a Supreme Court judge in April 2013.

He is the 47th and current Chief Justice of India. Following CJI Gogoi's retirement on November 17, Justice Bobde became the CJI and is due to retire in April 2021.

Notable judgements

Chief Justice Bobde has worked on several key judgements: He was part of the five-judge constitution bench which heard and delivered the judgment dated November 9, 2019 on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case.

He was also a part of a nine-judge Bench of the Supreme Court which in August 2017 declared the right to privacy as a fundamental right of an individual.

Justice Bobde has also played a key role within the Supreme Court — as the head of the committee to hear sexual harassment allegations against then-CJI Gogoi, and as the person who brokered peace between ex-CJI Dipak Misra and the four senior judges who held a press conference against how the court was functioning under him.
