PATNA: With the collapse of the grand alliance, former deputy chief minister of Bihar and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav’s political struggles may have just begun. The first among which is to keep his flock together, especially in his new role as the leader of the state’s single-largest party.

Yadav, who is set to be the leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, will now get an opportunity to pick the right issues across the state to corner the JD (U)-BJP alliance. In fact, he has already decided to tour the state to mobilise his party workers and start his battle against the Nitish government which has the backing of a strong Centre, said sources.

Unlike his father and RJD chief Lalu Prasad who had fought against BJP leaders such as Lal Krishna Advani, Tejashwi has to contend with PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. “His battle is not against only CM Nitish Kumar — he will have to fight a long battle with BJP in his own style,” said an RJD source. But Yadav isn’t too comfortable with the old guards of his father’s party, who is busy battling court cases.

“So, he will certainly look for new faces to assist him in his political struggle against the BJP-JD (U) alliance,” said another source in the RJD. The current political situation in the wake of the alleged corruption charges against him clearly suggest that he is the real successor to the party’s top post, and his father is ready to go to any length to defend him. “Tejashwi has to learn many things from his father on how to deal with his party workers and MLAs — so, it is a test for him,” an RJD MLA said.

“He will also have to win the trust of AICC Vice President Rahul Gandhi to create his own space in state politics,” the MLA explained.
