Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Police has announced a slew of measures to beef up security for women, including empowering the state’s ‘Anti-Romeo Squads’— a brainchild of chief minister Yogi Adityanath to tackle eve-teasing —with better technology.

The Anti-Romeo Squads and traffic police will get 25,000 body-worn cameras and post-mortem kits, police said on Tuesday, adding that 5,000 hand-held mobile tablets along with 15,000 desktops monitors will be provided for the Crime and Criminal Tracking Networks and Systems in the current fiscal.

The announcement comes a day after the state government decided to give its stamp of approval on setting up of 218 fast-track courts in the state for speedy trial of crimes against children and women. The same day, UP Police had also called for providing services of police response vehicles for women out on the streets at odd hours—between 10 pm and 6 am—and mandating for them to escort the women to their destination safely on their request on the state emergency number 112.

According to PRSIndia, the state government's budgetary estimates for FY20 included a 44% y-o-y jump in spending on police. This has been the highest increase among all the sectors.
