NEW DELHI: US President Donald Trump telephoned PM Narendra Modi on Monday and congratulated him on BJP’s victory in the just-concluded assembly elections in UP and other states, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said.

This was the third telephonic conversation between the two leaders since Trump won the election in November last year. The US President is the latest among a growing number of world leaders to have made congratulatory calls to PM Modi since the March 11 results.

A Delhi-based diplomat said that overseas governments keenly watched the assembly polls in UP, India’s most populous state, and four other states, because they felt that the elections would provide a mid-term appraisal of the Modi government at the Centre and indicate whether the BJP will face any serious challenge in the next general election in 2019.

Earlier, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, who was the chief guest at this year’s Republic Day celebrations, became the first foreign leader to call Modi after the poll results. He was followed by French President Francois Hollande and Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The other foreign leaders who called up to congratulate the PM include Mohammed Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak and Stefan Löfven, his counterparts in Malaysia and Sweden. Nicholas Sarkozy, former President of France, too called on PM Modi during his recent visit to Delhi and congratulated him.
