Heavy rainfall in the southern Arabian Peninsula, thanks to two cyclones in 2018, created the perfect breeding conditions in the deserts of Oman. Swarms moved to Yemen and later to Somalia and other East African countries. Meanwhile, new hordes from Iran, Saudi Arabia and Yemen entered Pakistan and India.
INDIA: Desert locusts entered Rajasthan in mid-April. They have since spread to Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

A swarm the size of 1 km, with about 40 mn locusts, can eat as much as what 35,000 people can in a day.
A swarm the size of Paris eats as much food in a day as half the population of France.
Man vs Locust: The main way to control swarms of desert locusts is by spraying organophosphate chemicals, ideally by drones and planes. Early destruction is key to curbing locusts’ growth and spread.
