NEW DELHI: The Yogi Adityanath government could spend Rs 16 cr on events to distribute certificates of its loan-waiver scheme to farmers. In an order, issued by chief secretary Rajiv Kumar on Monday, the UP government said camps will be held in each of the 75 districts and 332 tehsils to distribute certificates to farmers who will be transported to the venues.

UP is giving a Rs 36,000-cr loan waiver to 86 lakh farmers and a function was held in Lucknow last week to start the certificate distribution in presence of Union home minister Rajnath Singh.

“At a function that is chaired by CM, 11,000 farmers will be present and maximum Rs 35 lakh will be spent,” the order says, adding the presence of CM in a district will be communicated in due course. Ordinarily, a district camp will be chaired by the minister in-charge of the district on September 5. “At a camp to be chaired by the minister in-charge, 5,000 farmers will be present and the cost of organising the camp would be maximum Rs 10 lakh,” the order says. 2,000 farmers will be present at each tehsil camp that have a spending cap of Rs 2.5 lakh.

“The cost to be incurred on the camps is nominal compared to extent of the loan waiver,” a UP government official said. Earlier this year, the CAG had pulled up the then Akhilesh Yadav government for spending Rs 15 Cr on functions to distribute cheques worth Rs 20.58 Cr to beneficiaries of an unemployment scheme run by the state.
