Edited Excerpts:

How is the BJP’s preparedness for the civic polls?
The BJP is contesting in 652 out of 653 urban local bodies. At the district level, we have divided the state into six zones. We are contesting these polls with full preparedness, just as we did the Vidhan Sabha election. We have prepared a sankalp patra (document of pledge) on the lines of party manifesto, which we are taking to the people. The response has been very good. We will win with a huge mandate.

Which are the corporations where you are sure of a win?
We are sure in all 16 corporations. BJP will sweep the polls. But your party lost Bareilly to the SP last time… We did, but this time we will take even that mayoral post back from the SP.

Which party do you see as your main opponent in these polls?
All parties are fighting with the BJP even though they are not in a position to give us a good fight. One can say in one or two corporations there is a good fight with either the Congress or the SP. While we are fighting in entirety, others are not well prepared in all the wards. People feel the BJP government is working well at the Centre and in the state, and that the BJP has vision as well as experience to run corporations. They know if they vote for the BJP, their lives at the local level will improve substantially.

Can you name one or two seats where the BJP is facing a tough fight?
I do not think they are in a winning position. So why should I give them so much importance. As I said, the BJP is going to sweep the local body polls. Your opponents say that the Yogi Adityanath government has not delivered in its first eight months… In CM’s and my constituencies , we have been witnessing huge gatherings, and we have not used the central machinery, which is busy in Gujarat and other places. We are banking totally on our state machinery and resources. The public has high hopes from Modi ji and Yogi ji. People are with us. Vo jaante hain ki vipaksh ke aarop khokhle hain aur iraadon mein damm nahin hai (People know that the opposition’s allegations are false, their resolution hollow).

The Ram Mandir issue has resurfaced lately. How do you see the new developments?
Ram Mandir is a matter of faith for our party and vichardhara (ideology). Since the beginning we felt a solution must be found by the court which will be accepted by one and all. Even if a solution is found by political parties, we will welcome it. Already Allahabad bench has given its verdict, which is in our favour. Now we are waiting for the final words of the apex court.

How do you view the Congress’ position in these polls? And what do you make of the move to elevate Rahul Gandhi as Congress president?
Whether Rahul Gandhi becomes the president or anyone else does, it is the Congress’ internal matter. The Congress is anational party – there is no doubt about it. For a long time Rahul Gandhi has been the vice president and he was being projected as the future of the party. But polls after polls, his image has taken a beating. Hence, I do not feel his elevation will change the fortunes of the Congress. Even within the Congress, many responsible and senior politicians feel that he is immature. But they can’t groom and project anyone else because of familial reasons as the Congress is a parivarik (family-oriented) party.
