European shares start on a firm note

European shares rose on Monday as industrial activity in China gained strength, another sign of recovery from the coronavirus pandemic that added to hopes the global economy would also return to health. The broader Euro STOXX 600 rose 0.6%, with London's FTSE buoyed 1% and European oil and gas shares climbing 2% on rising oil prices.

Cipla shares rally 10% after Q1 earnings

Among the larger pharma companies, Dr Reddy stood out on the positive side and Lupin on the negative side. My guess is Dr Reddy could continue to do better. Cipla has done decently well but at the current prices, the valuations factor in most of the positives for Cipla in the short run at least.

What to expect from Titan Q1 numbers?

  • There are expectations that the company’s top line may take a hit due to the nationwide lockdown during the quarter, higher gold prices and limited big ticket spending by customers.

  • Motilal Oswal Financial Services sees a 65 per cent YoY drop in revenue of Titan Company. However, the brokerage expects bounce back in jewellery demand on the back of festive buying, wedding or occasion-based purchases.

  • Prabhudas Lilladher sees a 96.60 per cent YoY drop in adjusted profit after tax on 63 per cent fall in sales. EBITDA is likely to drop 82.20 per cent YoY.

Oil prices rise in early trade

Oil prices climbed in early trade on Monday, clawing back over half of Friday's losses, on a pledge from Iraq to deepen its crude oil supply cuts. US WTI crude futures rose 49 cents, or 1.2 per cent, to $41.71 a barrel, while Brent crude futures were up 40 cents, or 0.9 per cent, at $44.80 a barrel.

Financial markets in Japan and Singapore are closed on Monday for public holidays. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index eased 0.63 per cent, or 154.80 points, to 24,376.82. The rupee ended almost flat at 74.93 against the US dollar on Friday due to a caution prevailing in the forex market in view of mounting coronavirus cases and US-China trade tensions. Starting off on a tepid note, the rupee fell to a low of 75.04, but recovered slightly thereafter and moved in a narrow band throughout the session.

The NSE barometer on Friday formed a small bullish candle on the daily chart and a pattern resembling a Hanging Man candle on the weekly scale. A breach of the 11,240-250 range may help the index rally towards the 11,340 level, said analysts, who see support for Nifty at 11,100 level.

Domestic equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty ended flat on Friday. After touching a low of 37,787.38 during the day, the 30-share BSE Sensex clawed back lost ground to end 15.12 points or 0.04 per cent higher at 38,040.57. The NSE Nifty rose 13.90 points or 0.12 per cent to finish at 11,214.05.
