Volatility was the dominant theme early in the day, with the VIX index rising 4%. However, having lost 3.6% from last week’s peak, investors looked for bargain buying in Nifty, pushing it to the green territory by noon, with reports of high FDI into China lifting Asian equities. The recovery was led by pharma stocks, with banking and metal stocks also showing strength. Optimism over US stimulus has also helped, but the US central bank's meeting as well as F&O expiry this week could guide further progress.

Focus on long-term growth likely in Budget: Kotak Securities

Brokerage Kotak Securities said in a note that it expects the government to opt for a large infrastructure push, and finance it through aggressive sale of assets. "The Budget will likely reemphasize and set the stage for Atmanirbhar Bharat through a focus on social and physical infrastructure, the manufacturing and financial sectors, and social security for the population at the bottom of the pyramid. The government will face the challenging task of providing an expansionary fiscal impulse to support the post-pandemic economic recovery, while laying out a credible fiscal consolidationroadmap to bring down the overall public-debt-to-GDP ratio below 85% over the next few years," it said.

Domestically, the USD-INR pair is under appreciation pressure given by chunky foreign inflows which have reached nearly $2 billion so far in January. However, the RBI has done a remarkable job so far by absorbing excess inflows to manage volatility and protect the pair around 73.00 levels. We have seen in the past that the longer the pair trades within a range, the sharper is the breakout. Overall, the near-term range for the pair remains between 72.90 and 73.50, therefore one can buy on dips near 72.90-73.10 and sell on any uptick above 73.40 levels in the near term.
