    According to the data published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), Bharti Airtel network had average 4G download speed of 7.9 mbps, Vodafone 7.6 mbps and Idea 6.5 mbps. The average speed is computed by Trai based on the data it collects across India with the help of its MySpeed application on a real-time basis.

    "While we see a fast adoption of 5G across geographies globally, we do recognise the phenomenal boost that 4G has given towards enabling broadband connectivity for Indian consumers. 4G will stay relevant for quite sometime," Rajen Vagadia, vice-president and president, Qualcomm India, said.

    Brokerage CLSA said Jio’s 28-day and 84-day prepaid plans, offering 1.5 GB of data a day are 20% and 7% cheaper than Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea’s latest comparable offerings. Centrum backed the view, saying Jio’s plans across price-points remained the most attractive despite material increases in the tariff plans.

    The country’s mobile user base is set to fall for the first time in eight years this calendar with many people likely to give up their second or third connections due to rising cost of ownership.

    The US has been pressuring its allies and friendly countries, including India, to bar Huawei from 5G deployments, flagging security concerns and citing the company’s alleged proximity to the Chinese government. China has on its part warned India of economic consequences if Huawei was excluded from 5G development and deployments.

    A seven-member Group of Ministers has been constituted to fast-track & oversee implementation of the plan.

    The government is opposed to offering the 26 GHz spectrum band for 5G operations. COAI also said the Supreme Court's definition of adjusted gross revenue (AGR) was a misstep for the industry.

    In case no help comes on the AGR front, any hope that Voda Idea has will evaporate pretty quickly.
