Arun Jaitley (born 28 December 1952) is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party , who previously held the cabinet portfolios of Commerce and Industry and Law and Justice in the National Democratic Alliance government (1998–2004). From 2009 to 2014 he was Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and is also a former Minister of Defence. In the 2014 general election, Jaitley was the unsuccessful BJP candidate for the Amritsar seat in Lok Sabha, defeated by the Indian National Congress candidate Amarinder Singh. A lawyer by profession, he is a Senior Advocate of the Delhi High Court.

    Arun Jaitley had put forward convincing arguments to defend his party and government’s thoughts — a quality which won accolades from even the opposition benches.

    There was nothing flashy, forceful or confrontational about the way Jaitley managed the economy.

    Jaitley, 66, breathed his last at 12:07 pm at the AIIMS in Delhi after battling multiple health issues for the last several months. He was on life support.

    Jaitley, 66, was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences on August 9 after he complained of breathlessness and restlessness.
