China will also "perfect" the system under which the party has full jurisdictional power over Hong Kong according to the Basic Law and constitution, the party said, in a long statement carried by state news agency Xinhua.

Chinese officials also suggested the US could temporarily waive some tariffs, people familiar with Beijing’s position said. In return, China could remove tariffs on a reciprocal amount of US goods, mostly farm products, one of the people said.

The plan announced at a US business forum in Bangkok is meant to rival China's own multibillion dollar "Belt and Road" infrastructure program. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross asserted that the US will invest and trade more in Asia as a part of an American plan to support "sustainable" projects in Asia. China will not stop in its efforts towards "realising the complete reunification of the motherland," said Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe. Despite its territorial claims, Wei insisted that China's military ambitions were not aggressive.

“China deplores and firmly opposes that. India unilaterally changed its domestic laws and administrative division challenging China’s sovereignty,” he said. Responding strongly, the MEA in a statement said: “The matter of reorganisation... is entirely an internal affair of India... We expect other countries to respect India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
