  • This comes after NHAI raised ‘concerns’ regarding high cash transactions at 65 identified toll plazas in the country. Around 535 toll plazas under NHAI have been equipped with ETC infrastructure, and barring 65 of these, the remaining toll plazas have to mandatorily convert all lanes barring one in each direction into FASTag lanes January 15 onwards.

    During the assessment of highways, NHAI will look at the duration of traffic jams on highway stretches, the way-side amenities available and tow-away facilities in case of vehicle breakdown. Depending on the observations from the exercise, changes and improved practices will be incorporated in the design stage itself.

    “Our goal is to make good quality roads in the least time possible and reduce the cost of construction,” Gadkari said at the National Highways Excellence Award 2019 event here on Tuesday. “I am after my Secretary (road transport and highways) to give me a list of unproductive people,” Gadkari said.

    The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) won’t issue work order for highway projects under the public private partnership (PPP) mode unless it has 90% of the land is in its possession and without obtaining all statutory clearances.

    “We will do more of EPC projects at the moment,” Gadkari told ET in a brief interaction. With the ministry’s priority being monetisation of assets, engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) — which is entirely funded by the government —is the preferred mode of project award, Nitin Gadkari said.

    While the authority has already mandated implementation of FASTag on toll plazas and conversion of cash toll lanes to FASTag lanes, the speed breakers or rumble strips constructed at toll plazas are being removed with immediate effect for smooth vehicular movement.
