    “We have decided to shut down all non-essential services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region as well as Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Nagpur till the end of this month,” Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said in a televised address on Friday. Grocery stores, milk booths and banks will be among those exempt.

    As five more persons tested positive for the infection- four in Nagpur city and another one in Gondia district- the number has now climbed to 135, officials said.

    Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and other MLAs will be taking 60% deductions in their salaries, while class A to B employees will get a 50% cut. There will be no salary deductions for class D staff.

    On Monday morning the state had 89 cases, but by the evening it jumped to 97. The Maharashtra government has already ordered a curfew and has given blanket legal immunity to government and police officials to handle the situation. CM Uddhav Thackeray has already ordered for district borders to be sealed as well as the state’s borders to combat the virus.

    Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray announced the curfew on Monday evening after holding meetings with divisional commissioners, collectors, IPS officers & other senior officials in the state via video conferencing. The government got the feeling that people did not grasp the gravity of the situation & refused to be constrained to their homes.

    Three men and as many women, all confirmed coronavirus patients, died during the day, a health official said. The women patients were 84, 73 and 63 years old, respectively. "One of them died at the civic-run Nair Hospital while two succumbed at private hospitals in the city," the official said.

    Health Minister Rajesh Tope urged people to observe strict discipline so that the number of cases goes down, which will then pave the way for lifting of the lockdown. He, however, said that the lockdown will be lifted in phases whenever it is done, so that "not all the people can be allowed to come on to the streets at one go".

    Maharashtra reported four new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, taking the number of such cases in the state to 116, the highest in the country so far, officials said.​

    So far 107 people have tested positive for the deadly pathogen in the state, which has witnessed a steady rise in the number of cases with each passing day. The labourers, especially the daily wagers, seems to have gotten the raw end of the deal. The COVID-19 curfew has robbed the daily wage earners of their incomes.
