  • The meeting was seen as show of loyalty to the Congress high command and it’s first family at a time when the state Congress, in reality, is the junior most partner in the coalition government in Maharashtra.

Sharad Pawar who is the founder of NCP will turn 79 on December 12 this year. NCP has requested the supporters to observe Pawar's birthday as farmer's day and contribute money for the welfare of the disgruntled farmers affected by the unseasonal rains.

The leaders told Ajit that NCP may take harsh steps if he continued to hold out and made it clear that under no circumstances would NCP back BJP. Patil hinted that the meeting was not successful but the leaders may meet Ajit again. The three are believed to have promised ‘incentives’ in case he comes back.

Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party is likely to have 15 ministers including a deputy chief minister, while the Congress may get 13 berths and the Speaker's post, they said.

Ajit Pawar shocked his party after he was sworn-in as the deputy chief minister and Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Devendra Fadnavis as the chief minister of Maharashtra on Saturday morning.

Sena and Congress leaders want Ajit to be given an important role in the Thackeray cabinet to fine-tune coalition synergy. Pawar’s decision will bring clarity on which NCP minister will get the key home ministry after the post-assembly session Cabinet expansion.

There has been no official announcement on the dates, as the Congress’ list of ministers has not been finalised yet, according to both Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Congress leaders, like state Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat and other state leaders, are in Delhi to meet the party leadership to finalise the names.

The Congress has refused to submit its choice of ministers for the allocated portfolios, staying firm on its demand for plum posts and upping the mind games among the three main partners of the ruling coalition in Maharashtra.

The Shiv Sena was unable to procure letters of support from the NCP and the Congress by the deadline of 7.30 pm on Monday and the governor refused to grant it another 48 hours to prove its majority that it demanded to form a non-BJP government after severing ties with its pre-poll ally.

"Nothing like it if the BJP gives the Shiv Sena chief minister's post. But if the BJP is refusing, an alternative can be given. But the Sena should declare that it is no longer associated with the BJP and NDA. Alternative can be provided after that," NCP chief spokesperson Nawab Malik said.

He also said that despite the Congress being against the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Sena decided to join hands with it.
