He left Infosys in 2009 to serve as the chairman of the UIDAI, in the rank of a cabinet minister on the invitation of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He is popularly known as the Bill Gates of Bangalore. He is the man who inspired the slogan 'the world is flat'. Nilekani has co-founded National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), trade association of India's software industry. He has also written a book discussing the ideas for India's way forward named, 'Imagining India'.
