Centre, states must plan for post-Covid tourism: PM Modi

Tourism can play a big role in reviving the economy hit by Covid-19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told chief ministers on Monday as he pointed to the potential of domestic tourism as well as the opportunity to attract a larger number of overseas travellers.

    On April 6 state government had decided to file case of willful disobedience under the Disaster Management Act (DMA), against those attendees who visited Tablighi Jamaat Markaz in Delhi's Nizamuddin West and failed to self-declare. The government had set a deadline for them to self-declare. Assam has 29 cases of COVID-19 positive cases.

    As decided earlier Ministry/North Eastern Council (NEC) has already sanctioned Rs.25 crores to North Eastern States for gap funding to fight the COVID-19 outbreak effectively. This fund would be in the nature of untied fund, which can be utilized on any activity relating to COVID-19 Pandemic, and not covered under existing central packages.

    AAI stated Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati is considered the gateway to the north eastern states and a major hub for export of local products and the tourism. The meeting focused on enhancing more cargo facilities for the benefit of farmers and scope for agri-business in the state as well as the adjoining areas.

    Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has maintained that less than five lakh people will be eligible to apply under the CAA, and those who are saying that one crore people will come to Assam will have to tender apology to public after the application process is wrapped up.

    November to March is peak tourism season for Northeast India. Chairman of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) Jayanta Malla Baruah said following the anti-CAA violent protest, there have been series of cancellation from domestic and foreign tourists.

    Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said the security situation in the Northeastern states has improved substantially since 2014 and there has been a 78 per cent decline in casualties in security forces.

    "Our focus is to connect India's northeast with Thailand. northeast is being developed as a gateway to south-east Asia. This initiative will immensely strengthen India's act east policy and Thailand's Act West Policy," PM Modi said in his address at the 'Sawasdee PM Modi' event in Bangkok on day one of his visit for ASEAN, EAS and RCEP Summits.

    Special passenger trains are being run in Guwahati so that people reach their destination in upper Assam. One such train was operated on Friday to Dimapur. Trains were also run on Saturday to Furkating, the main railway junction in Assam's Golaghat district, and to Dibrugarh.

    The new amended citizenship law, which provides for granting citizenship to non-Muslim persecuted minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, has put the Northeast on the boil, where people fear that it may exacerbate the problem of illegal immigration.
