Supreme Court dismisses pleas seeking review of Nov 9 Ayodhya case verdict

Five review pleas filed were filed against the apex court's November 9 judgement. One petition was filed by the Muslims parties and one by a group of intellectuals. The Nirmohi Akhara, which was ousted as the sebait, or a caretaker, and instead given a single-member representation in any trust or body which would be set up to build a Ram temple at the site, had also filed a review of the ruling.

  • In the backdrop of gunning down of the four accused by Telangana police in an encounter, Chief Justice of India S A Bobde said that the recent events in the country have shaken the firm position of justice system as justice must never ever take the form of revenge and justice loses its character if it becomes revenge.

    "I believe the institution (judiciary) must correct itself and indeed it did during the time when the much-criticised press conference was held. It was nothing more than a self-corrective measure and I do not wish to justify it," Justice Bobde said during the inauguration of a new building of the Rajsthan High Court.

    Besides Justice Shukla, former Odisha High Court Judge I M Quddusi- who already stands charge sheeted by the agency in the scandal- along with five others have been booked by the CBI in a fresh FIR registered on December 4.

    Four separate fresh review petitions have been filed by Maulana Mufti Hasbullah, Mohd Umar, Maulana Mahfoozur Rehman and Mishbahuddin, who were party to the earlier litigation.

    The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team, which is carrying out searches at eight locations, has also visited the residence of a high court judge.

    The government on September 8, 2015, changed passport and foreigners acts to allow non-Muslim refugees from Bangladesh and Pakistan to stay in India even if they had or hadn’t entered the country with valid papers.

    The Supreme Court had taken into account that three judicial officers of the eight recommended by the Bombay High Court had crossed the prescribed age limit. However, the SC found Debadwar, Tavade and Kulkarni fit for elevation, keeping in view their excellent service records and the need for more judges, given the increasing pendency of cases.

    Justice Gogoi's tenure as judge and as CJI was marked by some controversies and personal allegations but that never came in his way of his judicial work that was reflected in the last few days when benches headed by him delivered some path-breaking judgements.

    Assam police has been tasked with the security arrangement for Gogoi’s ancestral home in Dibrugarh and another house in Guwahati. A senior police official in Assam said, “We have received a communication from the Union home ministry where it is stated that Gogoi’s security is upgraded to Z plus, which is the highest security cover."
