  • If politics creates religious issues, then one should know the country is being run by wrong people, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said while attributing the comment to the legendary civil rights leader. Raut has of late been taking aim at the BJP, with which the Sena recently severed ties, through his posts on the micro-blogging site.

Maharashtra claims the border district of Belagavi was part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency, but is currently a district of Karnataka, on linguistic grounds. Bus services from Kolhapur district in Maharashtra to Karnataka had been suspended on Sunday against the backdrop of the ongoing border dispute between the two states over Belagavi.

"Just tweeting a protest against Gandhi's insult of Savarkar will not do. (Shiv Sena president) Uddhav Thackeray has to take a stand on whether he wants to share power with the Congress which has insulted the national icon and freedom fighter," BJP spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain said. He further said that there is anger across the country against Rahul Gandhi.

Ahead of her visit here this week, Ambassador Alice Wells, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, described Mr Shringla as the "Captain of India-US relationship." Wells also said that Shringla would play an important part in the India-US relations to achieve its potential.

Sena leaders said that the shifting out of accounts from Axis Bank or discussions around a shift are to do with finding “safer” public sector banks. Amruta Fadnavis, the wife of former CM Devendra Fadnavis, is a senior executive with Axis Bank. A spokesperson for the BJP claimed vengeance on part of the former ally.

The scale of protests prompted its top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah, to decouple the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) with the NRC. If the outgoing year again highlighted the appeal of 'brand Modi', it also brought to light the BJP's vulnerability in state elections.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu's statements come in the wake of violent protests in the country against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

"Rumours are being spread about the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. There is a deliberate attempt to create a divide in society and it is condemnable. The Act is not against any religion, and there is no provision in it to take away the citizenship of any citizen of the country," Fadnavis told reporters.

Some state governments have raised concerns regarding compensation on the GST. The states had pegged the pending dues at around Rs 50,000 crore. In this regard, representatives from various states held a meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier this month.

Amruta said, “The accounts were bagged by Axis bank much before I married Devendra.. during the tenure of the Congress-NCP regime. Private banks are also Indian banks and provide superior technological services. The government should think rationally. By doing this(shifting the accounts), they (the government) are trying to target Devendra and me,”

The Sena last month dubbed as inadequate the Rs 10,000 crore aid announced by the then BJP-led state government for crop damage due to unseasonal rains. An editorial in 'Saamana' last month said the woes of cultivators should be addressed and they should be given Rs 25,000 per hectare.
