UN chief Antonio Guterres is closely following the situation in New Delhi and stresses that demonstrators should be allowed to demonstrate peacefully and security forces should show restraint.

  • The Kashmir issue has not yet been included in the agenda of the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) that begins from Monday in Geneva but India is all prepared to counter Pakistan's planned move to raise the issues of "Kashmir and rights of minorities in India" at the session.

    The Foreign Office claimed that a 40-year-old civilian sustained serious injuries in the ceasefire violations by Indian troops in Nezapir Sector on Tuesday. "This escalation in ceasefire violations by India is continuing from the year 2017 when the Indian forces committed 1,970 ceasefire violations," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

    Speaking at the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council which is being held here in Switzerland from February 24 to March 20, Vikas Swarup, Secretary (West), the ministry of external affairs, described Pakistan as the epicentre of global terrorism. He called for decisive action against states who direct, control, fund and shelter terrorists, in an obvious reference to Pakistan, which is accused by its neighbours of providing safe havens to terror groups.

    The report was released on Wednesday by a commission of over 40 child and adolescent health experts from around the world. It was commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and The Lancet medical journal. In the report assessing the capacity of 180 countries to ensure that their youngsters can survive and thrive, India ranks 77th on the Sustainability Index and 131 on the Flourishing Index, it said.

    The two countries have more than 50 bilateral inter-governmental dialogue mechanisms for exchange of views on issues of mutual interest.While defence and counter-terror cooperation has dominated headlines in the past, relations are equally robust in other areas like science and technology, space, energy, education, diaspora and regional and international cooperation.

    The UN chief, who arrived in Pakistan on a four-day visit, addressed a press conference along with Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, wherein he also expressed his "deep concern" over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and tensions along the Line of Control (LoC). Guterres also said that it was important for India and Pakistan to de-escalate "militarily and verbally" and exercise "maximum restraint".

    "Insufficient international response in countering the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons, the challenges that Member States face to detect and seize them, as well as porous borders, allow terrorists and criminals to move illicit weapons from one country or region to another," UN Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism said.

    "It is absolutely essential when a nationality law is changed, the statelessness is prevented. Because when basic right of anyone anywhere is to have a country that a person calls his, then everything should be done in order to avoid statelessness,” The United Nations chief said.
