  • On December 18, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper will host his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh, at the Pentagon for a bilateral meeting. Following this, he and Singh will drive down to the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department to join External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for the second India US 2+2 ministerial.

The NDAA 2020, which was signed by US President Donald Trump a few days ago, authorises $738 billion for fiscal year 2020 for military activities, including expansion of the aircraft fleet and the F-35 program. Both these will add teeth to the American deployment in the Indo-Pacific region.

Since confirming that Iranian military leader Soleimani had been killed by a U.S. airstrike, administration officials have claimed they acted because of an imminent risk of attacks on American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region. Democrats and a few Republicans in Congress have questioned the justification of the attacks.

The Army task force would help neutralize some capabilities China and Russia already possess and are intended to keep U.S. carrier groups away from the Asian mainland

President Donald Trump said Tuesday it isn’t the right time for the U.S. to pull out of Iraq. “Eventually we want to be able to allow Iraq to run its own affairs,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “This isn’t the right point.” U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper was adamant on Monday that “there’s been no decision made to leave Iraq. Period.”

Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said that China is "deeply concerned about it and resolutely opposed to it". "The relevant US actions are a serious violation of the international consensus on the peaceful use of outer space, undermine global strategic balance and stability, and pose a direct threat to outer space peace and security," Geng said.

Hossein Salami made the pledge before a crowd of thousands gathered in Kerman. His vow mirrored the demands of top Iranian officials — from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to others — as well as mourners across the Islamic Republic, demanding retaliation against America for a slaying that's drastically raised tensions across the Middle East.

After the attacks subsided, Trump and Pence made a round of calls to congressional leaders, and even some of the president’s hawkish allies said that Trump should be measured in his response to the Iranian strikes.

President Donald Trump ordered the Jan. 2 strike against Gen. Qassem Soleimani after the death of an American contractor in Iraq. Now, as the massive demonstrations of Iran's public mourning period for Soleimani come to a close, officials believe the next steps by America' longtime foe will determine the ultimate course of the latest crisis.

The attacks came hours after US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said the US should expect retaliation over the US killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani in a drone strike in Iraq on Friday. Iran says 80 "America terrorists" were killed in the missile strikes, but US president Donald Trump says "All is Well!

Iranian officials said Tehran did not want a war and its strikes "concluded" its response to Friday's killing of Qassem Soleimani, a powerful general whose burial in Iran after days of mourning was completed around the same time as Iran's missile launches.
