    Eminent economist and JNU professor C P Chandrasekhar on Monday said he had withdrawn from the newly-constituted 28-member Standing Committee on Statistics (SCES), chaired by former chief statistician Pranob Sen, citing the situation in the university.

    The event, to take place from 22 February to 1 March, 2020, was announced by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik along with union Minister for Human Resources and Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju and Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan.

    "I am truly delighted to announce that the first edition of the Khelo India University Games will be held in Bhubaneswar. I am sure the true spirit of sportsmanship will be showcased during this event," Patnaik said at the launch of the Games, in the presence of sports minister Kiren Rijiju.

    "We observe with dismay that in the name of student politics, a disruptive far-left agenda is being pursued. The recent turn of events in campuses from JNU to Jamia, from AMU to Jadavpur alarms us to the deteriorating academic environment due to the shenanigans of a small coterie of left-wing activists," the academicians wrote to the prime minister.

    The resignation of Allahabad University Vice Chancellor Ratan Lal Hangloo, who was under the scanner over alleged financial and administrative irregularities, has been accepted. He was under the scanner since 2016 over irregularities. Hangloo was also summoned by the National Commission for Women (NCW) last week over several allegations.

    Protest has its own romance. The problem is that it has been tried before and invariably led to disenchantment and subsequent anger. The slow self-realisation that some people are — what Lenin called — ‘useful idiots’ in a larger game can trigger bitterness. In the wider world, it can provoke a vicious reaction. We may be on the cusp of experiencing such a backlash.

    What is remarkable about these protests is their organic nature. Muslim students took the lead. Having watched the government and Hindutva organisations push their divisive agenda since 2014, the CAA broke the dam of fear and intimidation.

    The Centre uploaded the gazette notification for the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act, ensuring the Act comes into play with immediate effect.
