ISRO to launch geo imaging satellite on March 5

ISRO has scheduled its GSLV-F10 geo imaging satellite, GISAT-1 launch from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota on March 5 at 5.43 pm. Weighing about 2,275 kg, GISAT-1 is a state-of-the-art agile Earth observation satellite that will be placed in a 'geosynchronous transfer orbit' by GSLV-F10.

  • "The launch of GISAT-1 onboard GSLV-F10, planned for March 05, 2020, is postponed due to technical reasons. Revised launch date will be informed in due course," ISRO said in a statement.

    ISRO has earmarked $1,600 million for launch vehicles, of which $870 million will be for PSLV and the remaining for Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, he revealed. ISRO has planned some 500 Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle launches in the next five years. The Government Owned Contractor Operated (GOCO) model is picking up very well in the space and defence sectors.

    These initiatives are part of the advanced Space-based Information Support for Decentralised Planning (SISDP) project. The first phase of SISDP was completed in 2016-17.

    The country has an opportunity to integrate medium-sized satellites, Pavuluri said, because they are designed to last for over five years and companies invest huge sums in building them.

    Iran carried out at least two failed satellite launches last year. The United States says it is concerned that long-range ballistic technology used to put satellites into orbit could also be used to launch nuclear warheads. Tehran denies that satellite activity is a cover for missile development.

    ​CARTOSAT-3 is a third generation agile advanced satellite having high resolution imaging capability.

    Blasting off from the Ariane Launch Complex in Kourou, a French territory located in northeastern coast of South America at 2:35 am IST, European space consortium Arianespace's Ariane 5 vehicle injected GSAT-30 into the orbit in a flawless flight lasting about 38 minutes.

    With clear skies in the background, the 44.4 metre tall rocket lifted off majestically at 3.25 pm from the first launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here. Incidentally, the launch marks a significant milestone for the space agency as it is the 50th flight of PSLV and the 75th vehicle mission from Sriharikota.

    With space becoming a vital dimension of any country's economic and military superiority, A-SAT (Anti-Satellite) weapons play a critical role in providing the necessary strategic deterrence. In March last year, the DRDO launched 'Mission Shakti', India's first A-SAT mission and demonstrated its anti-satellite technology.
