The Galaxy Fold became the first smartphone with a flexible folding display to be available to the consumers. While there were some issues with the first set of devices in terms of durability, Samsung quickly fixed those and launched the smartphone commercially. Though Huawei announced its foldable smartphone first, it was never launched. We give the Galaxy Fold credit for defining a new category of smartphones.

Another gaming phone makes the list. While the ROG Phone II wins the category for its feature set, the Nubia stands out with its innovation in design. This is the first and the only smartphone with an actual fan inside the body for cooling. You can hear the fan running from the heat vents. Combined with the liquid-filled heat pipe, the smartphone runs cool even after hours of gaming.

Reno was the new series from OPPO and the Reno 10x Zoom was the first device in the series that focussed on design, performance and innovation. It showed a new style of pop-up mechanism with its shark-fin rising camera and innovated rear camera with a new periscope lens for lossless zoom. What impressed most was its no camera bump – it had a smooth flat design that looked beautiful.

Nokia 9 boasts of five 12MP cameras on the rear with Zeiss optics that work in tandem to deliver photos with superior details and supports RAW format capture for full creative control. While most camera smartphones moved to quad-camera set up, Nokia 9 PureView’s offering of a Penta camera setup is something that will be taken up by more brands in the coming year.

LG-G8X-Thinq

While LG didn’t opt for the foldable display smartphone idea, they did innovate a similar smartphone design. The G8X ThinQ Dual screen features two 6.4-inch screens joined together by a 360-degree hinge for enhanced productivity. The screen can be flipped and locked at any angle and if you want you can detach the second screen and just use the single-screen phone. This is another category that we expect to pick up in the future.

There were a few other smartphones that were announced in the year that fall in to the same category of gamechangers such as the Mi Mix Alpha, Vivo NEX 3 and Moto Razr 2019. However, they have not been included here as we have focused only on the phones that were launched in India.
