Apple on Wednesday officially unveiled its next generation of Apple Watch Series 4 at its annual event at the Apple Park in San Francisco. Introducing it on stage, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook called it the number 1 watch in the world.

The device brings a design overhaul to the Apple Watch as the iPhone-maker is now using a new dual-core 64-bit S4 processor, custom designed to boost performance. The manufacturer claims that performance will be two times better than previous models, and oOther hardware improvements include an updated accelerometer and gyroscope.

The new hardware equips the Apple Watch Series 4 to detect falls. Armed with a chip sensor, it can automatically trigger a call to emergency services if the user remains immobile for a minute after the fall. Continuing its focus on fitness, the revamped Watch will also screen heart rhythm for irregularities and will be able to capture an electrocardiogram (ECG).

Apple has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US to allow its Watch to be used as a medical device. In fact, this will be the first ECG product offered over-the-counter directly to consumers.

The digital crown has been overhauled so it now includes haptic feedback, and the LTE red dot indicator is now a ring. Apple has also improved the speaker on the Apple Watch Series 4 so it’s now louder thanks to a redesign. The rear of the watch is now black ceramic with sapphire crystal.

The Apple Watch Series 4 will have 30 per cent larger screens. The Series 4 GPS will be available in 26 markets at launch, while the cellular version will be ready in 16 markets with 34 carriers.

The WatchOS 5 will be available September 17 onwards.
